Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE) is entering into a partnership with the infrastructure major Uralungal Labour Co-operative Contract Society (ULCCS) for collaboration in the courses offered by the Indian Institute of Infrastructure and Construction (IIIC) under KASE.

An MoU in this regard will be signed between KASE and ULCCS at the Mascot Hotel here on May 30, in the presence of Labour and Excise Minister Shri T P Ramakrishnan.

The partnership recognizes infrastructure and construction as one of the biggest sources of employment opportunities in India and across the globe and the need to skill the youth through courses of international standard.

The IIIC, based at Chavara in Kollam District, has been set up   to conduct courses in skill development for workers and managers in infrastructure and construction sectors and to facilitate their employment.

It is significant that the expertise and experience of the nine-decade-old ULCCS is being factored in by IIIC to bridge the huge gap between required and available skills among unemployed youth across the globe making this unique among the various skilling initiatives taking place at the International, national and state levels.

A non-profit company and the state’s nodal agency for facilitating and coordinating various skill development initiatives, KASE was set up with the objective of skilling the youth  of Kerala elevating their skills to global standards and there by tapping unlimited job opportunities within the country and abroad.

IIIC will offer three categories of courses – Technician level, Supervisor level and Managerial level, covering important trades related to the infrastructure and construction sector, such as bar bending, electrical works, painting and finishing, concreting and formwork, plumbing and masonry.

In all, 38 courses will be offered and the student strength per year across all categories when the institute is fully operational will be 2350.

The courses at IIIC are structured in such a way that the students will get job placement immediately on completion the course, with at least 60% placement being assured by the operator. This will be ensured through industry partnerships with leading companies in various sectors mostly in infrastructure and construction sector within the country and abroad.

Apart from the Minister, the MoU signing function, scheduled at 11AM, will be attended by Sri Tom Jose IAS, Additional Chief Secretary, Dr Sriram Venkitaraman IAS, MD, KASE, Shri Remeshan Palery, Chairman ULCCS, Shaju S, MD, ULCCS, Dr. T P Sethumadhavan, Director UL Education along with officials and experts.

A seminar on “Skills for the 21st century” will be held at Hotel Mascot from 9.30 AM as part of the function with presentations by experts KASE, ULCCS, Industry, NSDC, CII, etc and over 100 delegates as participants. ​
